Pterygium

Pterygium is a growth of the conjunctive or mucous membrane with blood vessels tgat covers the white part of eye over the cornea. This growth is often shaped like a wedge. It can remain small or grow large enough to cover part of the cornea.

It usually doesn't cause problems or require treatment, but it could, if it interferes with your vision.

Causes

Exact cause of the pterygium isnt known.
Studies suggest that too much exposure to UV light can lead to these growths. It is known to occur more often in people who live in warm climates and spend a lot of time outdoors in sunny or windy environments.

Symptoms

Generally a pterygium doesn’t cause symptoms. But when it does, the symptoms are mild like;

  • Redness
  • Blurred vision
  • Eye irritation
  • Could cause a foreign object in your eye

Treatment

A pterygium usually doesn't require any treatment unless it's blocking your vision or causing severe discomfort. Incase you are experiencing symptoms, a doctor can prescribe you eye drops or eye ointments that can help reduce inflammation.

Surgery is indicated when a pterygium causes a lot of vision or a condition called astigmatism which can result in blurry vision.

VissionTip : Your eye doctor might want to check your eyes at regular intervals to see if the growth is increasing or causing any vision problems.
