What is a Femtosecond laser (FL)?

A type of laser that emits optical pulses with a duration well below 1 ps (ultrashort pulse) is known as a femtosecond laser. Usually, It is in the domain of femtoseconds (1 fs = 10^ -15 s) which is one quadrillionth of a second. The femtosecond laser also comes under the category of ultrafast lasers or ultrashort pulse lasers which also include picosecond lasers and other types of lasers. 

FL is extensively used in femtosecond laser cataract and refractive surgery. It is a surgical tool employed to prepare accurate, uniform, and predictable incisions in the cornea during the surgery.  

Where do you use Femtosecond Laser?

Femtosecond laser is typically used for refractive and cataract surgeries.

For the refractive surgery - this laser helps to flatten the cornea to treat nearsightedness, increasing the steepness of the cornea to correct farsightedness, and evening out an irregularly shaped cornea to treat astigmatism.

Procedure

While conducting Femto laser treatment for the eye, the tissue is broken apart at the molecular level with the help of lasers rather than a cut with a sharp blade. The femtosecond laser disrupts stromal tissue through a process known as photoionization. With the help of this process, the targeted tissue is vaporized. The vaporized region creates a split where a cut would normally be made during the femto laser treatment for eyes.
