Your optometrist or ophthalmologist will verify your vision, administer glasses and contact lenses, and detect, cure, and avoid a range of eye diseases. Your eye doctor may, however, refer you to a retina specialist for treatment of some eye conditions. A retina specialist is a medical practitioner who has completed an extra one to two years of rigorous, sub-specialized training in diseases and surgery of the retina and vitreous body of the eye since specialising in ophthalmology. Vitreoretinal medicine or vitreoretinal surgery are other names for this subspecialty.
The retina is a layer of nerve cells that forms the interior of the eye's back wall. The retina absorbs light and transmits information to the cortex, helping you to see. Retina experts treat a wide range of complex eye problems. Below are some of the most common diseases and problems that they treat:
The retina is a layer of nerve cells that forms the interior of the eye's back wall. The retina absorbs light and transmits information to the cortex, helping you to see. Retina experts treat a wide range of complex eye problems. Below are some of the most common diseases and problems that they treat:
Diabetic retinopathy- Diabetic retinopathy affects at least 50% of diabetics, and it is now the primary cause of blindness nowadays. To screen for retinopathy, all diabetics should undergo an annual intensive eye test from an ophthalmologist or optometrist. Blood vessels in the retina are weakened by elevated blood sugar levels, allowing them to expand, burst, or close, stopping blood from flowing adequately in the eye. On occasion, irregular blood vessels develop on the retina.
Diabetic retinopathy is classified into two forms. The early stage is known as non-proliferative (NPDR), while the latter stage is known as proliferative (PDR). New treatment options are rising the odds of diabetic retinopathy patients maintaining usable vision.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)- AMD is the primary cause of vision loss in adults over 50. The macula, a member of the eye, is weakened in AMD. The macula is the integral portion of the eye that is in charge of fine vision. Dry and wet AMD are the two forms of AMD. The most common form of AMD is dry, while wet AMD is less common but more extreme. Over the past decade, medical experts have made tremendous strides in the fight against AMD-related vision loss.
Retinal tears or detachment- As you grow older, the eye's vitreous will shorten or change the form, but this normally doesn't cause any complications. It can, however, pull away from the retina, especially if you are near-sighted or have inflammation. A retinal tear happens as the vitreous takes a fragment of the retina with it. The retina can separate from the back of your eye if the vitreous continues to pull, resulting in blurry vision. A retinal detachment can result in blindness if left untreated. Retina experts use laser therapy (photocoagulation) or a cooling treatment to cure retinal tears (cryotherapy). They will also perform surgery to correct retinal detachment.
Penetrating ocular trauma- Injuries to the eye that infiltrate it, typically caused by a high-velocity or sharp projectile striking it, will result in serious vision loss. Retina specialists have received comprehensive instruction in detailed surgical procedures for stabilising and healing these injuries.
Macular hole or pucker- Macular holes and puckers will also impair the central vision. The macula may be pulled when the vitreous divides from the retina due to ageing or damage. This will lead to the formation of a macular hole over time. A clear membrane made up of a sheet of cells protects the macula's surface and then shrinks, inducing wrinkling or puckering of the retina in a macular pucker. Both macular gaps and macular puckers are treated with vitrectomy, a specialised procedure performed by retina specialists.
These are some of the most common problems of the retina which can be cured with the appropriate treatment. There are many retina specialists in Mumbai who provide the best treatment. One of the senior specialist, Himanshu Mehta, a world-renowned optical surgeon who has done over 5,000 refractive procedures, leads The Vission Eye Center in Mumbai. His vast expertise means that we are on the cutting side of corrective eye surgery technologies and retinal detachment treatment and still delivering the best quality of patient care. Our mission is to boost people's quality of life, regardless of their economic standing, social background, caste, creed, or nationality.
